Mt. Woodson Castle sits in the hills of Ramona, California, about 40 minutes from downtown San Diego. Eight-foot-thick stone walls, hand-hewn ceilings, and grounds that look more European countryside than Southern California. Built by One Woman, Over 12 Years

The castle started in 1909, when San Diego dress designer Amy Strong set out to build her home on the slopes of Mt. Woodson. She was serious enough about it that architects lived on-site during the design process, working the landscape into the blueprints as they went. By 1921, the result was a 12,000-square-foot, 27-room house that's never been replicated.

Nothing Here Was Mass-Produced

This is a real Craftsman Movement building, not a Craftsman-*style* one — the philosophy was to work with the land, not around it. Amy hand-selected every stone from the mountain herself. Eucalyptus, oak, and redwood came straight off the property. The adobe bricks on the second story were hand-formed on-site from local clay. The roof tiles are believed to be salvaged from the historic San Gabriel Mission. And no chalk line was ever used during construction, which is why there's not a single perfect corner in the place, the floors are intentionally uneven, and the rooflines actually undulate. Every room has something in it that your guests won't find anywhere else.

A Style That Doesn't Match Anything

The outside leans European and Medieval. The inside mixes Mesoamerican, Mediterranean, North American, and East Asian design, each piece chosen to symbolize prosperity, health, friendship, and good fortune. A working windmill that used to pull water from the property's springs still stands above the roofline; it's one of the most photographed details on the estate, and one your guests will be talking about after the event.

• Castle Lawn & Oak Terrace - two separate outdoor spaces, framed by mature trees and views of the San Diego backcountry, with the castle's stone facade as the backdrop. Good for opening receptions, award presentations, or a change of scenery between sessions.

• The Great Hall — the main indoor space, with wood-beamed ceilings, floor-to-ceiling stone walls, a 16-foot ceiling, and four fireplaces. Works for a keynote, a seated dinner, or a full gala — the room does the heavy lifting either way.
